Jeremy's Impressions 'This game is awesome,' is the only thought I could muster for nearly two straight hours today, while Executive Producer Kudo Tsunoda walked us through his latest project,. Despite the fact that I was a big supporter (and critic) of last year's inaugural effort, I still never expected to see something this improved and this good so quickly. Truth be told, I haven't had this much fun with an in-house demo in a very long time, and judging by the continually growing mass of editors that congregated behind me, neither had they. The key to unfinished excellence is its two-punch combination of enhancements to both the presentation and the gameplay - the most obvious of which are the visuals. The already-impressive boxer models from last year, for example, have been doubled in both the number of polygons and textures, in addition to realistic facial animations that are eerily lifelike. Instead of the expressionless dead-eye mug of last year's fighters, Round 2 now offers complete physical movement of the face. Cheeks puff in and out realistically against mouthpieces as fighters breathe; eyes blink and follow targets just as real oculars would; and individual muscles on the chest, arms, and legs flex and move against their skeleton just as real bodies do.
Characters even sweat and bleed more profusely as the match wears on, and react specifically to damage in individual areas rather than using generic maps. In short, it's the best-looking sports game that EA has put out on any system so far. But the graphical improvements aren't just confined to a fighter's body, as the visual enhancements are also obvious in other areas. Ringwear, for instance provides some of the more subtle evidence with full-on cloth and tassel physics for trunks. Providing an extra pizzazz, the boxing gloves use what Tsunoda referred to as 'render mapping' for realistic reflections and other details like creases, crinkles, and stains. Venues even add a realistic depth of field effect to make far-off objects appear blurrier than closer ones, while the crowd, lighting effects, and number of people onscreen have all increased.
But in a move that's even more important for returning HDTV owners, the game's widescreen mode no longer slows down or stutters when turned on. Thank the heavens! Another big addition this year is the implementation of a much more flexible 'Create-A-Champ' feature.
Instead of using slider bars or a limited interpretation of Tiger Woods' Gameface stuff, Fight Night Round 2 offers full morphing technology. Craniums, foreheads, eye positions, eye shapes, nose bridges, nose tops, mouths, lips, cheeks, chins, ears, jaws, and a myriad of other important features can all be stretched and skewed to extreme proportions.
The development team at claims that you could literally make anyone you want with this system, and based on what we've seen of it so far, we're inclined to believe them. Of particular note are the fat and muscle manipulators that allow you make a giant tubby warrior or a miniscule mini-man.
It's pretty cool. Speaking of changes to the physique, your career is no longer 40 mirror-imaged fights one after another. In Fight Night Round 2, your training affects the look of your fighter. Train too little before a big fight, and you'll lose some of your tone and definition - possibly even becoming fat. But train too much, and you become a giant hulking beast that can hit incredibly hard but lacks the speed he might need against the smaller guys. Throw in the ability to switch weight divisions (a feature that may not make it in the final version) and an age-system that affects the look, weight, and abilities of your fighter, and the new direction already sounds a lot better than last years. Too bad we didn't get the chance to play it at length.
What we did get to play at length, however, was the most important feature - the boxing match. And here's where the fun really began. Though somewhat similar to last year's game, a host of new elements add a ton of new strategy to the match-ups. Knockdowns are far less frequent for well-trained fighters as the impact of each blow has been adjusted to far more realistic levels.
Pulling off combos with the analog stick is much easier than they were before, too. In fact, the combo system is one of the most significant improvements, as players will no longer have to go through full motions to execute specific punch combos. Now, certain combinations are treated like a traditional fighting game so that the game allows you to buffer your next punch with half-movements into your follow-up. This allows players to throw combinations much more quickly with the analog stick, and it also enabled the team to set the groundwork for something more important - an advantage for skilled players.
